Our place in Tasmanian History
“Lauderdale Cottage is an important example of a colonial villa estate that has retained its original 1844 curtilage and built features. The level of integrity and intactness of Lauderdale Cottage, including the main house, outbuildings garden and orchard, is a rare example. The grounds of Lauderdale have probably been cultivated since 1805 when free settlers were sent to establish farms on the fertile land beside the New Town Rivulet. There is a continuous history of the use of the land for orchards and market gardens since that time, and the layout of the orchard may date back to the 1820s.
Lauderdale Cottage demonstrates the principle characteristics of a Victorian Regency villa with Greek Revival elements and is set within the context of an intact nineteenth century villa estate. Lauderdale Cottage is a well known and prominent historical place and the combination of its built elements within the setting of established gardens and orchard contribute to the community’s appreciation of the place.” - Tasmanian Heritage Council , July 2017
